Recovery Institute
Get & share information about heroin, other
addictions & methadone maintenance. The Addiction Recovery
Institute opened in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on August 1, 1993, as a
private methadone program. From the beginning, the agency's goal has
been to provide a high-quality program for our patients in an
environment of dignity and respect. Michael N. Hoff, M.A., who has
an extensive background in both methadone and drug-free treatment,
founded Addiction Recovery Institute (ARI) to combine the intensive
drug-free treatment with medical intervention associated with opiate
substitution therapy. |

Addiction
Science
Research forum & resources on the neurobiology of
addiction. AddictionScience.org is a project supported by the
Wheeler Center for the Neurobiology of Addiction at UCSF. Our plan
is to leverage the ease of publication and communication provided by
the internet to facilitate collaborative science. The field of the
Neurobiology of Addiction is particularly amenable to
cross-disciplinary analyses - molecular, cellular and systems
neuroscientists at one end, clinicians and clinical researchers at
the other. We hope that by bringing discussions and opinions from a
variety of sources to an open forum, further discussions and
brainstorming will ensue. Again, by bringing together a variety of
resources on methods and technologies, a database of people in the
field, and various learning tools we can aid in lowering the barrier
to the initiation of meaningful research. Finally, a major
impediment in the development of treatment for substance abuse is
the lack of communication between clinicians and basic science
researchers. We hope to help bridge this gap, again by facilitating
communication through an open forum. |

address the enormous problems caused by alcohol and drug abuse, the
University of Washington established the Alcohol and Drug Abuse

beginning, ADAI's mission has been to conduct and support research

Alcohol
& Substance Abuse
MedValet/Community Outreach Health Information System
(COHIS) is a project with two main goals; to promote health and
disease prevention using the World-Wide-Web of the Internet and to
actively involve the under-served communities around Boston in
accessing this information by educating them on how to use the Web.
The COHIS Committee was formed to make these goals reachable.
MedValet/COHIS can be described as a central resource for health
promotion and disease prevention on the Web. It makes use of the
most current technology, including, hypertext, graphics, videos, and
virtual reality 3D animations, to make learning more interactive.
Our primary focus is on children in their pre-teen or teenage years
and by using such technology, we intend to stimulate interest in
this group for education and learning. However, we are not limited
to this age group since we provide information on health topics that
are very important to everyone. The topics include; AIDS/HIV,
Alcohol and Substance Abuse, Cancer, Cardiovascular Diseases,
Environmental Hazards, Infectious Diseases, Nutrition, Partner
Violence, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Smoking and Tobacco Abuse,
Teen Pregnancy/Maternal & Neonatal Health, and a special
feature, Trauma and Emergency Medicine. |

Alliance
Project
The Alliance Project is an effort by a broad
cross-section of organizations that share common concerns about the
devastating disease of alcohol and drug addiction and the dramatic
lack of proper public response to this growing health crisis.
Despite the fact that researchers learn more each day about the
strong biological and genetic roots of alcohol and drug addiction,
stigma and discrimination are still very real, public policy that
treats addiction equal to other major diseases is far off, and jails
remain the collecting spot for many with addiction. The
organizations supporting The Alliance Project believe that a
stronger constituency, including an active recovery community united
around a common strategy and theme, is essential to achieve
enlightened understanding of alcohol and drug addiction as the
health care issue it is. Public policy must also change to bring
America's response to alcohol and drug addiction to a level equal to
its incidence and effect on society. |

Betty
Ford Center
The history of the Betty Ford Center is part of the
life story of our founder, former First Lady Betty Ford. After
completing her own treatment for chemical dependency at the U.S.
Naval Hospital in Long Beach, Mrs. Ford talked to her friends about
the need for a treatment center that emphasized the special needs of
women. Her good friend, Ambassador Leonard Firestone, encouraged
Mrs. Ford to pursue her dream and in 1982, they co-founded the
nonprofit Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California. From its
earliest days, the Betty Ford Center has treated women and men
suffering from chemical dependency. The Center has always saved 50%
of its space for women and 50% for men. Women and men reside in
separate halls. The program lasts between 28 to 32 days. All family
members are deeply affected when one family member is chemically
dependent. Family members are offered support and education through
our five-day Family
Program. The Children's Program is for children ages 7 to 12 who
are not themselves addicted, but are living with chemically
dependent family members. Visit our Kids'
Corner to find out more. |

the interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors as
they relate to the initiation and continuation of drug use and
abuse, and to develop and test communication and other intervention
strategies for drug abuse prevention. |

Cocaine
Anonymous
"Cocaine Anonymous is a fellowship of men and
women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other
so that they may solve their common problem and help others to
recover from their addiction. The only requirement for membership is
a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering
substances. There are no dues or fees for membership; we are fully
self supporting through our own contributions. We are not allied
with any sect, denomination, politics, organization, or institution.
We do not wish to engage in any controversy and we neither endorse
nor oppose any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay free from
cocaine and all other mind-altering substances, and to help others
achieve the same freedom. We use the Twelve Step Recovery
Program, because it has already been proven that the Twelve Step
Recovery Program works." C.A.'s Purpose: C.A. is
concerned solely with the personal recovery and continued sobriety
of individual drug addicts who turn to our Fellowship for help. We
do not engage in the fields of drug addiction research, medical or
psychiatric treatment, drug education, or propaganda in any form --
although members may participate in such activities as
individuals. Cocaine Anonymous is open to all persons who
state a desire to stop using cocaine, including "crack"
cocaine, as well as all other mind-altering substances. There are no
dues or fees for membership. Our expenses are supported by the
voluntary contributions of our members -- we respectfully decline
all outside contributions. We are not allied with any sect,
denomination, politics, organization or institution. |

Common
Sense
Use of alcohol and other drugs among young
people is a growing concern. Fortunately, parents can take an active
role in lowering their children's risk and helping them grow up
alcohol- and drug-free. To help parents learn what they can do, the
National PTA has created: Common Sense: Strategies for Raising
Alcohol- and Drug-Free Children.
This new area of the Children First Web site was launched in 1998 as
an extension of a substance abuse prevention program sponsored by
the National PTA in 1990. Since then, Common Sense has reached
thousands of parents across the country. Designed primarily for
parents with children in grades 3 to 6, it also offers resources for
parents of younger and older children and practical ways for PTA and
community leaders to share the program with parents. Common Sense
focuses on four specific parenting strategies: learning the facts
about alcohol and other drugs, setting clear limits for children,
providing positive role models and building strong bonds within the
family and school. |

Community
Anti-Drug Coalitions of America
CADCA's mission is to build and strengthen the
capacity of community coalitions to create safe, healthy and
drug-free communities. The organization supports its members with
technical assistance and training, public policy, media strategies
and marketing programs, conferences and special events. With more
than 5,000 community coalition members from across the country,
Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) is working with
these coalitions to realize its vision of: An Organization of
Excellence Building Drug-Free Communities. Community coalitions-more
than any other entity-are poised to connect multiple sectors of the
community, including businesses, parents, media, law enforcement,
schools, faith organizations, health providers, social service
agencies, and the government. By acting in concert through the
coalition, all of the partners gain a more complete understanding of
the community's problems. Together, the partners organize and
develop plans and programs to coordinate their anti-drug efforts.
The result is a comprehensive, community-wide approach to substance
abuse and its related problems. |

Elks
Drug Awareness Resource Center
Since its inception in 1983, the Elks Drug
Awareness Program has worked to prevent drug use by our youth
through education. The Elks recognize that they are not experts in
the field of drug education. However, we do have the resources -- in
dollars, facilities and volunteers -- to work with the experts to
ensure that young people know the facts about drugs. In addition to
sponsoring seminars, workshops and drug-free functions, we print and
distribute literature developed by authorities on drug awareness.
Since 1983, we've printed and handed out more than 125 million
pieces of literature to students, their teachers and their parents.
We hope that through this resource center, we can reach even more
people. You have our permission to print and distribute this
material. |
